www.rei.com Dan, an REI Outdoor School instructor, shows the safest way to slow down and stop your road bike in this video. Tip: The left hand controls the front brake; the right hand controls the rear brake. The key to slowing and stopping is to grab then both at the same time and with the same pressure. Caution: Do not use too much front brake! Tip: For sudden stops, shift your weight to the back of the bike to help maintain your stability.

Thanks for the video….very nice!!! On August 3rd 2009 my 12 year old son was run over by 2 trucks while on his bike and survived. No helmet on, rode thru a redlight and was out, 3 No No’s..My sons miracle of life inspired me to have a website created called (miraclecomeback) 3ws in front and dot com at the end. Bilal

@LevFunebrak Which is fun on a mountain bike, but on a road bike with tubulars….one should consider ditching ;) .

Thanks, REI! Before I watched your super awesome instructional video, the only way I knew how to stop was to ride into a tree. This should save me thousands in hospital bills!

I have read something similar. The other thing is, that when you brake in the high speed sharply with both brakes, your back wheel can get shear. (like a tale from the fish.)

front brakes will not tip you over the bars if you know how to use your brakes wisely. front brake gives you the most stopping power between the two brakes. it will stop your bike immediately after you squeeze on your lever.
